Closing the Gap in Health Equity through Technology

16 November 2015 | 09:00 – 17:00 Maison de la Paix, the Graduate Institute, Geneva

The Global Forum on Health Promotion will explore in its 2015 edition how current and emerging technologies can impact on promoting health and well-being of people from all parts of the world, in particular the marginalized and vulnerable. Electronic communication and information technology not only covers technical development but also reflects a state of mind, a way of thinking, and an attitude which closely connects health promotion to behavioral change. Mobile health offers a way to empower citizens to better control their own health while reducing health care costs. Currently more people have access to mobile devices than to clean water, electricity or toothbrushes.Innovative technologies have enormous potential to improve human well-being and to address health equity. This is particularly relevant in the area of environmental health where major technological advancements are contributing to decreased exposure to environmental risks. Successful examples of technological implementation illustrate the core values of equity. Technological progress, however, does not always guarantee equitable health outcomes.

Follow-up to the First Brainstorming Session on Health Promotion, 25 February 2008

WHA Briefing: During the 61st WHA the NGO Advisory Group on Health Promotion held a Planning Meeting in the UN Palais on 21 May 2008. The main theme discussed was: Local Wisdom – a missing link in primary health care.

2007

NGO Advisory Group, First Brainstorming session, 3 December 2007

The NGO Health Promotion Advisory Group meeting 9th of March 2007 built on past consultations to develop a framework for NGO and civil society action in health promotion.
This Follow-up meeting built on the work and discussions at the WHO/NGO Workshop in February 2006. At the Workshop many participants expressed interest in starting a wider network on health promotion. The Advisory Group on Health Promotion is proposing some Terms of Reference for discussion at the meeting.

At this meeting the new Coordinator for Health Promotion in WHO, Dr. Gauden Galea gave an update on recent health promotion projects and how he would like to see NGOs taking an active role. Have a look at the final agenda and report of the meeting.

Action Plan :

The 2007 Health Promotion Advisory Group meeting held on the 9th of March 2007 built on past consultations to develop a framework for NGO and civil society action in health promotion. Participants expressed interest to form a wider Health Promotion Platform which could serve to strengthen the collective contribution of NGOs and civil society in health and development at all levels by facilitating open partnerships, amplified advocacy and collective solidarity in health promotion. Following the discussions and agreement of participants, this action plan has been drafted to describe the activities of the Platform, input from Partners, and expected outcomes over 2007 – 2009. Action Plan

Strategic first steps
As an outcome of the WHO-NGO Workshop “From vision to action: NGOs Promoting Health in a Globalized World” (WHO, Geneva, February 2006) the following strategic first steps were identified:
• Develop a formalized platform for networking and collaborative action in health promotion.
• Develop a technical working group jointly with WHO to review best practices, literature and case studies.
• Identify their own commitment and entry points for action in implementing the charter.
• Follow-up and report on the outcome of this workshop and the WHO-NGO Action plan on health promotion at the 7th Global Conference on Health Promotion in Africa, in 2009.
• Monitor and evaluate progress on the implementation of the Bangkok Charter, at all levels, before the 2009 Conference.

NGOs’ Action Framework for the Implementation of the Bangkok Charter on Health Promotion
This action framework was developed in the light of the deliberations of the break-out sessions held during the WHO / NGO workshop: From vision to action: NGOs Promoting Health in a Globalized World (WHO, Geneva, 23rd February 2006). The purpose is to provide NGOs with a broad framework for health promotion to which collectively, or individually they may wish to contribute.

WHA Briefing: The 60th World Health Assembly marked the 10th Anniversary of the NGO Advisory Group on Health Promotion. The 10th Briefing held on 16th May 2007 seeded a timely debate to explore the role of NGOs in primary health care and engaged participants to re-examine opportunities for multi-sectoral sustainable action to strengthen health systems.
