Observation of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People, New York, 10 August 2009

The UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, in cooperation with the CoNGO Committee on the International Decade for the World’s Indigenous People and the New York Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, is organising an event observing the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. The event will take place on 10 August 2009 from 14:00 to 17:00 hours at the UN HQ in New York.

ECOSOC Substantive Session, Geneva, 6 - 31 July 2009

The High-Level Segment (6 – 9 July 2009) of ECOSOC’s Substantive Session has been concluded with the consensus adoption of its Ministerial Declaration on Implementing Internationally Agreed Goals and Commitments on Global Public Health.

The Substantive Session is now continuing with its Operational Activities Segment (15 – 17 July 2009), which is to “review how far the UN system has gone in implementing the guidance of the General Assembly on operational activities”.
Following the Operational Activities Segment, the Humanitarian Affairs Segment will take place (20 – 24 July 2009) to provide a “forum where Member States and Humanitarian Organisations discuss the challenges, opportunities and activities related to the strengthening of the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance of the United Nations”.

In conclusion of the Substantive Session, the General Segment will be held from 23 to 30 July 2009, which is to review the reports of ECOSOC’s subsidiary bodies and other UN entities working within the economic and social field. More information is available on ECOSOC’s site.

Civil Society Development Forum 2009 – Implementing the Internationally Agreed Goals and Commitments in regard to Global Public Health, Geneva, 2 – 4 July 2009

CoNGO held its Civil Society Development Forum (CSDF) 2009 from 2 to 4 July at the ILO in Geneva. It was conducted back-to-back with ECOSOC’s High-Level Segment (6 – 9 July 2009) which focused on the theme “Implementing the Internationally Agreed Goals and Commitments in regard to Global Public Health”.

At one of the six Workshops entitled “Ensuring the Right to Health for Women through the Life-Cycle” the NGO Alliance for Health Promotion made a presentation on “Local Knowledge in Health Promotion – a Gender-sensitive Approach”.

The Outcome Document of the CSDF 2009, Geneva was circulated to all member governments of ECOSOC during its High-Level Segment.

The New York Component of the CSDF 2009 is scheduled to take place on 15 and 16 October 2009. A follow-up event will take place in Vienna on 11 November 2009.
